Navigating the Concept of a 70-Hour Workweek for the Young Indians

Recently, in an interview, Infosys founder Narayan Murthy suggested on social media that youngsters in India must work for 70 hours a week to be successful and enhance the development and growth of the country, ultimately increasing India’s productivity. He emphasized that our culture needs to become highly determined, and citizens must improve their productivity through extreme discipline and hard work.

Murthy also noted that hard work, dedication, and resilience are necessary for success. In today’s fast-paced and competitive world, the need to put in long hours is often driven by the desire to advance professionally and achieve personal success.

However, controversy arose as some argued that forcing employees to work longer hours would not only lead to physical exhaustion but also mental fatigue. They suggested that India should focus on increasing productivity through the use of technology rather than taxing labour. Work productivity in India is currently low, and addressing corruption in the government is essential.

At some level, as compared to other countries, development should involve citizens working hard for the benefit of the country, similar to how Japan and Germany grew by having their citizens work harder and for longer hours to rebuild their nations.

Working long hours can create both challenges and opportunities for younger generations. While long hours can provide valuable experience and opportunities for career advancement, it is important to strike a balance and protect one’s physical and mental health.

There is controversy among many people in the statement of Narayan Murthy:

Working 70 hours a week is okay.

Getting no promotion is Okay.

Criticising the staff is Okay.

Getting no festival leave is Okay.

But when employees ask for:-

Salary Hike is Not Okay.

Work-life balance is Not Okay.

Promotion is Not Okay

In the USA, employees get overtime if they work more than 40 hours, but in India, expecting employees to work for 70 hours in exchange for a certain annual package is deemed unreasonable.
